  2. Notes on installing JWP

  5. *** Why a setup wizard for JWP?
  6. ************************************************************
  7. The reason for a JWP setup wizard is to make it much easier
  8. for people to get JWP installed and working on their PC.
  9.

  11. *** Features
  12. ************************************************************
  13.  - Works like setup wizards that come with professional
  14.    software packages.
  15.  - The setup wizard provides a simple guided installation
  16.    process as opposed to the tedious setup method described
  17.    in the JWP manual.
  18.  - The setup wizard is five files that fit nicely onto
  19.    three 1.44MB floppy disks
  20.  - The setup wizard sets up the INI file with the correct
  21.    settings for fonts and EDICT dictionaries.
  22.  - Works with Windows 3.1, 95 and NT.
  23.  - Simpler Internet distribution by using self-extracting
  24.    zip files. The knowledge of how to use PKUNZIP or where
  25.    to get it from is not required.

  28. *** What files have been excluded from the setup wizard?
  29. ************************************************************
  30. To fit on three floppy sized disks, the folowing JWP files
  31. were left out.
  32.  -   German documentation
  33.  -   Replica version of the JWP manual
  34.  -   Recreation files
  35.  -   Vertical 48 x 48 font
  36.  -   EDICT and ENAMDICT dictionaries.
  37. Included files are JWP, manuals, text files, 16x16, 24x24,
  38. 48x48 fonts and source files. Should you require any of the
  39. excluded files, visit 'ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/'
  40. to obtain them.

  43. *** Turning the Internet download files into JWP setup files
  44. ************************************************************
  45. If you have downloaded or received JWPSETU1.EXE, JWPSETU2.EXE
  46. and JWPSETU3.EXE, you must turn these into setup files. To do
  47. this you must perform the following procedure three times,
  48. once for each file.
  49.  
  50. Where ever the files are, locate them with the Windows File
  51. Manager (Win 3.1) or Windows Explorer (Win 95 and Win NT).
  52. Double-click JWPSETU1.EXE to run the self-extractor. When the
  53. program runs, it will display a dialog titled "WinZip
  54. Self-Extractor". By clicking the "Unzip" button, Winzip will
  55. create a new subdirectory below the current directory,
  56. decompress the files and place them in the new subdirectory.
  57. When WinZip is finished, click the "Close" button.
  58.  
  59. Repeat this two more times with JWPSETU2.EXE and JWPSETU3.EXE.
  60. After this, you should be left with the following five files
  61. in the new "Unzip" subdirectory: SETUP.EXE, SETUP.ARV, SETUPMN.ARV,
  62. SETUP.A02 and SETUP.A03. To begin the guided installation, double-click the
  63. SETUP.EXE file.

  65. Tip: Instead of extracting the files to the hard drive, you
  66. can directly build a set of setup floppy disks. Prepare three
  67. blank 1.44MB floppy disks, label them 1 through 3 and insert
  68. Disk 1 into your floppy disk drive. With File manager,
  69. double-click JWPSETU1.EXE to display the Winzip Self-extractor.
  70. In the "Unzip To Folder" text area, replace the word "Unzip"
  71. with "a:\" (excluding quotation marks) if your floppy drive is
  72. drive A. Click "Unzip" and WinZip will decompress the files
  73. straight to the floppy disk. Repeat this with JWPSETU2.EXE and
  74. JWPSETU3.EXE installing a new floppy disk each time. When
  75. finished, you should have the following files on three disks:
  76.      Disk 1 - SETUP.EXE
  77.      Disk 1 - SETUP.ARV
  78.      Disk 1 - SETUPMN.ARV
  79.      Disk 2 - SETUP.A02
  80.      Disk 3 - SETUP.A03

  84. *** Installing JWP
  85. ************************************************************
  86. From the floppy disk or hard drive, run the newly created
  87. SETUP.EXE and follow the setup wizard instructions.

  90. *** EDICT Dictionaries
  91. ************************************************************
  92. As the development of version 1.31 is frozen and the EDICT
  93. dictionaries are being regularly updated, at Jim Breen's
  94. request, EDICT and ENAMDICT have intentionally been left out
  95. of the installation.

  97. EDICT and ENAMDICT will be available from the Nihongo archive
  98. in the form of EDCSETUP.EXE and ENMSETUP.EXE. Setup wizards
  99. have been created for both EDICT and ENAMDICT so their
  100. installation for Windows users is also simplified.

  102. Although the EDICT dictionaries are not installed, the JWP
  103. setup wizard does initialize JWP to look for the dictionaries
  104. in the JWP directory.
